Immediate rest is propably important, but then maybe light activity in other sports or physical activities which you don't do could be good. But I'm thinking all that long endurance activity is draining the muscles from energy, and ther are sort of leaking and to make them functioning normally I would maybe suggest light strength training. I really don't have any scientific basis on that, but are basing this from experience from my own training.
